An F-16 Fighting Falcon and an F-35 Lightning II stood side by side in Hangar 999 at Luke Air Force Base as the 944th Operations Group held a ceremony on Oct. 17, 2026, marking the transition of command from Col. Peter H. “Bolt” Cossette to Col. Mark A. “Bags” Warner. The event brought together Airmen, families, friends, and community partners in a celebration of change and continuity within the group.
Leadership Transition
Col. Todd Riddle, commander of the 944th Fighter Wing, presided over the ceremony, which followed Cossette’s retirement and his final flight, known as a fini-flight, the day before. Riddle commended the relationship between the wing and its active-duty counterparts and thanked the Airmen who transported the F-16 from Holloman Air Force Base. He praised Cossette for his attention to detail, highlighting the impact of his leadership over the past three years.
Cossette, a 2003 U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, has logged over 3,000 flight hours in both the F-16 and F-35. His career included assignments in Italy and South Korea, as well as instructor and leadership roles at Luke and other fighter training bases. He transitioned to the Air Force Reserve in 2013 and took command of the 944th Operations Group in May 2024. During the ceremony, he received the Legion of Merit for his contributions to the group’s operations and future capabilities.
Reflections and Future Plans
In his farewell remarks, Cossette shared personal reflections on his career, recalling a recent college visit with his children. He encouraged young people to pursue interests that are meaningful rather than chasing titles. He expressed gratitude for the support from instructors, personnel, and families, stating he would miss the collaboration in problem-solving.
Warner’s assumption of command followed a lengthy decision-making process. Riddle added a touch of humor regarding Warner’s delayed acceptance of the command position, which was first offered in November 2025. Warner, a 2004 Air Force Academy graduate, transitioned to the Reserve in 2016 after 12 years of active duty, accumulating over 2,600 flying hours. His previous roles included leading the 69th Fighter Squadron and serving as the acting commander of the 944th Maintenance Group.
Commitment to Mission and Community
At the ceremony, Warner expressed his appreciation for his family’s support in his decision to continue serving. He emphasized that his motivation was the chance to engage in meaningful work alongside dedicated individuals. Riddle acknowledged Warner’s commitment to fostering a community spirit both on and off the flight line, noting that while fighter pilots are recruited with excitement, it is the families that keep them engaged in the Reserve.
As Cossette concludes his military career, Warner begins a new chapter, ensuring that the 944th Operations Group will continue its mission with the support of its Airmen and families.
