Lufthansa launches service to Munich

German airline Lufthansa has announced it will begin nonstop service between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Munich’s Franz Josef Strauss International Airport starting August 3, 2027. This marks the first-ever direct connection between Phoenix and the Bavarian capital.

Details of the Service

The flights will be operated using an Airbus A350, featuring a three-class configuration with a total capacity of 293 seats: 48 in Business, 21 in Premium Economy, and 224 in Economy. The service will run three times a week, on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Flights will depart Munich at 1:20 p.m., arriving in Phoenix at 4 p.m., and will leave Phoenix at 5:50 p.m., arriving in Munich the following day at 1:25 p.m.

“The addition of this new nonstop service from Phoenix to Munich is a win for our residents, our businesses and the community as a whole,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. She emphasized Phoenix Sky Harbor’s status as a top airport and highlighted the city as a key destination for international tourism and investment.

Economic Impact and Connectivity

Dirk Janzen, Lufthansa Group Vice President of Passenger Sales for the Americas, expressed enthusiasm for the new route, noting its potential to connect travelers from Phoenix and Arizona directly to their Munich hub. The service aims to facilitate both business and leisure travel, providing access to numerous destinations across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia through Lufthansa’s extensive global network.

The introduction of this flight is expected to significantly benefit the local economy. According to the airport’s recent economic impact study, international flights contribute more than $3.4 billion annually to the local economy. The new service is projected to generate an annual economic impact of $81.2 million for the Phoenix community.

Enhanced Travel Options

Lufthansa joins a growing list of international airlines offering flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor, which already connects to various destinations in Canada, Mexico, as well as cities like London, Paris, and Taipei. The addition of Lufthansa’s service expands travel options for Arizonans and reinforces Phoenix’s position as a key hub for international travel.
