A long trip back home

Randy Bennett has returned to his roots as the new head coach of Arizona State University’s men’s basketball team after spending 25 years at St. Mary’s College of California. The former point guard, who grew up just ten minutes from ASU’s Tempe campus, is embracing the opportunity to lead the Sun Devils.

Journey Back Home

Bennett’s journey back to Arizona has been a long one. He attended Mesa Westwood High School, where he began to develop his passion for basketball. Although he wasn’t the most talented player, his competitive spirit and leadership qualities stood out to his teammates. After playing at Mesa Community College from 1980 to 1982, he moved on to become the head coach at St. Mary’s, where he built a successful program that earned 12 NCAA Tournament berths.

Despite his success, Bennett found himself drawn back to ASU when the coaching position opened up. He expressed his affection for St. Mary’s but felt an undeniable pull to return to the program he had always admired. “I really want to do a good job here,” he said, reflecting his commitment to the role.

A Familiar Environment

At ASU practices, Bennett is surrounded by familiar faces, including former high school coaches and friends from his past. This camaraderie has revitalized his coaching approach. “Every week I’m here, I’m happier,” he noted, appreciating the connections he has rekindled.

Bennett’s enthusiasm is palpable when he discusses his vision for the Desert Financial Arena, where he hopes to create an energetic atmosphere reminiscent of his experiences at St. Mary’s. He aims to build a competitive team that can attract dedicated fans.

Coaching Philosophy

Bennett’s coaching philosophy reflects the principles instilled in him by his father, Tom Bennett, a former coach at Mesa Community College. Emphasizing discipline and hard work, Randy shares his father’s belief in man-to-man defense, stating, “We don’t zone. We never play zone.” His experience and established style suggest a commitment to maintaining high standards for his players.

While he relies on his experienced coaching staff, Bennett is hands-on when necessary, ensuring his players remain focused and engaged. His dedication to player development and attention to detail has drawn praise from peers who recognize his commitment to establishing a successful program.

Looking Ahead

As practice wraps up, Bennett reflects on the unexpected turn of his career that has led him back to ASU. His journey, marked by hard work and determination, has come full circle. “I wasn’t planning on ever being here,” he admitted, acknowledging the serendipity of his return. With his extensive coaching background and deep ties to the community, Randy Bennett is poised to make a significant impact on the Sun Devils’ basketball program.
