Maricopa County Board Approves E-Bike Regulations
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved new regulations governing the use of electric bicycles, or e-bikes, in unincorporated areas of the county. The ordinance defines e-bikes as bicycles or tricycles equipped with functioning pedals and a small electric motor.
According to Board of Supervisors Chair Kate Brophy McGee, the new rules aim to enhance safety for riders, pedestrians, and others using public roadways and spaces. She noted that the ordinance aligns with similar regulations adopted by various municipalities throughout Maricopa County.
Collaborative Effort for Safety
The ordinance was developed through collaboration between Chair Brophy McGee, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. It is designed to provide clear guidance regarding the legal operation of e-bikes, including specific age restrictions. The push for these regulations comes in response to a rise in e-bike-related accidents, with the goal of safeguarding community members and reducing incidents.
Arizona law classifies e-bikes into three categories:
- Class 1: Pedal-assisted bikes with a maximum speed of 20 mph
- Class 2: Motorized bikes that do not require pedaling, also limited to 20 mph
- Class 3: Pedal-assisted bikes that can reach speeds of up to 28 mph
Under the new ordinance, individuals under 16 years old are limited to riding Class 1 or Class 2 e-bikes. Riders of Class 3 e-bikes must be at least 16 and wear helmets if they are under 18 years of age.
Exclusions and Additional Information
The ordinance specifically does not apply to regional parks within Maricopa County, which have their own established rules regarding e-bike usage. A complete overview of the new regulations is available for public download and review.
