The City of Phoenix has initiated a citywide food drive in partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank to address the rising food insecurity in the community. The campaign aims to support families and individuals struggling to afford nutritious food as living costs increase.
Details of the Food Drive
Mayor Kate Gallego emphasized the community’s spirit, stating that Phoenix residents are ready to assist their neighbors in need. She highlighted the importance of the holiday season food drive and welcomed contributions of food, funds, or volunteer efforts.
Monetary donations are particularly encouraged due to their effectiveness in maximizing food bank resources. For instance, a single dollar can provide approximately ten meals, thanks to bulk purchasing and other financial efficiencies leveraged by food banks.
Community Support and Impact
Milt Liu, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the city’s collaboration, recalling the success of the inaugural food and fund drive in 2025, which resulted in over 156,000 meals distributed. Liu noted the heightened need for assistance in 2026 as more families face difficulties in accessing food.
Food donations can be made at various city facilities during their business hours, including libraries and community centers located throughout Phoenix. Additionally, residents have the option to donate at several local food pantries, making it easier for those in need to access resources.
High-Demand Food Items
The food drive is particularly focused on collecting high-demand items such as canned meats, beans, peanut butter, and canned fruits and vegetables. For individuals requiring assistance, the city has provided information on where to receive food boxes and other support resources.
