A recent community event in Fountain Hills showcased the spirit of volunteerism as residents came together for the 18th annual Make a Difference Day. Over 370 volunteers participated in various projects aimed at assisting local residents, particularly seniors, with home maintenance tasks.
Community Participation
On a breezy Saturday morning, volunteers, including many young children, gathered to help trim trees, pull weeds, and clean up yards throughout the town. Sal, a long-term resident since the 1970s, expressed his gratitude as volunteers worked on his property. He remarked, “They do a wonderful, wonderful job,” highlighting the significant assistance the volunteers provided.
Sal noted that he is no longer able to handle landscaping tasks due to physical limitations and that hiring a lawn service can strain his budget. “It saves me a lot of money,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of the volunteers’ work for those on fixed incomes.
Impact on the Community
This year, 374 volunteers took on 32 projects, primarily focused on residential homes. Many of the residents served are seniors who may not have the resources to address home maintenance needs. Kim Wickland, the Town’s volunteer supervisor, remarked, “For them, this could be the help that they don’t get.”
Groups spread out across Fountain Hills to complete essential tasks such as clearing brush, raking leaves, and organizing homes. Denise, another volunteer, shared her enthusiasm for community service, stating, “Happy to help out,” and noting that the abundance of volunteer opportunities was a factor in her decision to move to the area.
Volunteering Hours and Community Spirit
Volunteers collectively dedicated 1,496 hours of service during the event, reflecting a strong commitment to community support. Wickland expressed her admiration for the turnout, saying, “It’s amazing to see everyone come together” and described the kindness and generosity displayed as overwhelming.
The Town of Fountain Hills has expressed its appreciation to all participants in Make a Difference Day, underscoring the importance of community involvement in fostering a supportive environment for residents in need.
