Broadcasting a college football game over 5,000 miles from home involves more than just a microphone, as demonstrated by the Sun Devil Radio Network crew during their recent trip to London for the Union Jack Classic. The team faced unique challenges while adapting to logistics and equipment limitations for the event held at Wembley Stadium.
Behind the Scenes of the Broadcast
In an episode of ASU All Access aired on Sept. 19, 2026, Shawn Crespin, who oversees radio operations for Sun Devil Athletics, shared insights into the extensive preparations for the game against the University of Kansas. The production team included familiar voices such as Tim Healey, the longtime announcer for the Sun Devils, former ASU quarterback Jeff van Raaphorst, and sideline reporter Kevin Turner.
The crew viewed the opportunity to broadcast from Wembley as a significant and memorable experience, reflecting their long-standing teamwork and shared history. However, the journey also required careful planning due to weight and space restrictions on the flight. Crespin indicated that they could only bring about half of their standard equipment for road games, with the remainder left behind in Tempe.
Adapting to Travel Challenges
Despite the equipment limitations, the crew was optimistic about the broadcast quality. Crespin expressed confidence that listeners would not notice the difference, stating, “It’ll sound awesome on the air. The listener will have no idea.” The advance preparation allowed them to prioritize essential gear and adapt their setup for the unique venue.
The Union Jack Classic, which took place on Sept. 19, marked a historic moment as the first college football game at Wembley Stadium. Arizona State emerged victorious with a 24-17 win over Kansas, adding to the significance of the trip for the team and its supporters.
