Residents in Scottsdale are advised to prepare for increased rainfall and the potential for flooding as two weather systems are expected to impact the Phoenix area from Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for Scottsdale and the surrounding metropolitan area during this period.
Potential Rainfall and Flooding
Forecasts indicate that Friday’s showers and thunderstorms may bring localized rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches, with some storms producing rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. A subsequent weather system is anticipated to deliver another wave of widespread rain Saturday night into Sunday, potentially adding another 1 to 2 inches across the affected areas. These conditions, combined with already saturated ground, could lead to increased runoff and flooding in low-lying areas and washes.
Halloween Preparations and Safety Tips
Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates as they plan Halloween and weekend activities. Showers are predicted to return Saturday night and continue into Sunday, prompting the need for indoor backup plans for outdoor gatherings or recreational events. If thunder occurs, people are advised to seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle and to avoid low-lying areas.
The city emphasizes the importance of safety during heavy rain, recommending that motorists avoid unnecessary travel, adhere to road closures, and not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. The slogan “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” serves as a key reminder for residents.
Flood-Prone Areas and Emergency Resources
Heavy rainfall could lead to temporary closures of unbridged crossings, particularly in areas like Roosevelt Street, Osborn Road, and others. Residents should be aware of frequently flooded locations, including several streets near Scottsdale Road and Pima Road.
For those concerned about flooding risks, the city is providing free sand and sandbags at two self-service locations. Residents can fill their own sandbags at the District 1 Police Headquarters and the Solid Waste Transfer Station, with a limit of 10 bags per household. It is recommended to complete this preparation before heavy rain begins.
Additional Flood Prevention Measures
Property owners prone to flooding are encouraged to explore flood protection options, such as diversion tubes and portable barriers, available from hardware stores and online. Following the manufacturer’s instructions for installation is crucial for effectiveness.
Residents are also encouraged to participate in Arizona’s “Ready, Set, Go!” emergency preparedness program by assembling emergency kits, creating family communication plans, and securing outdoor items. Keeping storm drains clear of debris when safe to do so is also advised.
