Agnes’s story

Agnes's story

Agnes, a resident of Maricopa County, has experienced significant improvements in her quality of life thanks to the Senior and Adult Independent Living (SAIL) program. Struggling with mobility issues and isolation, she reached out for assistance and has since benefitted from various services aimed at enhancing her independence.

Challenges Faced by Agnes

Agnes faced considerable difficulties in daily activities, including meal preparation, personal hygiene, and maintaining her apartment. Mobility issues and numbness in her hands and legs, attributed to osteoporosis and degenerative joint disease, hindered her ability to care for herself. Living alone exacerbated her situation, leaving her isolated at home, especially as her aging electric wheelchair became increasingly unreliable.

Support Through SAIL Program

In 2000, Agnes enrolled in the SAIL program, which is managed by the Maricopa County Human Services, Senior Services and Community Resilience Division (SSCRD). Initially skeptical about the help available to her, Agnes began to receive case management services. Her case manager coordinated essential support, including home-delivered meals and attendant care, which were critical in helping her maintain her independence.

Enhancing Independence with New Mobility Aid

Despite the support she received, Agnes’s old wheelchair continued to threaten her ability to live independently. However, through a partnership with Maricopa County Public Health, her case manager was able to secure a new scooter for her. This upgrade has had a profound impact on her daily life. Agnes has reported feeling safer and happier, allowing her to enjoy meals and visit nearby places with confidence.

Positive Outcomes and Ongoing Support

Agnes’s journey highlights the effectiveness of the SAIL program in improving the lives of residents in Maricopa County. She has developed a trusting relationship with her case manager, which has contributed to her renewed sense of independence and well-being. Agnes’s experience is a testament to the meaningful support provided by the SAIL team at the Maricopa County Department of Human Services.
