City proposes Manzanita Library as new name for library

Phoenix Public Library has announced that the proposed name for its new library at Estrella Civic Space will be Manzanita Library. This decision was made after community input and reflects the local heritage as well as the themes of growth and learning.

Community Involvement in Naming

The name Manzanita was selected to honor the flora of the Arizona Sonoran Desert, continuing the library’s tradition of naming locations after native plants. The proposed name will be submitted to the City of Phoenix Library Advisory Board, after which it will be reviewed by the Historic Preservation Office’s Heritage Commission. This commission will then make an official recommendation to the Phoenix City Council for final approval.

Looking Ahead

Phoenix Public Library expressed appreciation for the community’s involvement in the naming process, emphasizing the importance of feedback in creating a space that reflects the values and diversity of the Phoenix community. Updates and opportunities for further community input will be provided as the project progresses into the design phase.
