NASA is allowing the public to send their names on a microchip aboard the Dragonfly rotorcraft as it prepares for its mission to explore Saturn’s moon Titan. This initiative is part of the “Journey to Titan” campaign, which aims to engage people in the first science mission to fly and study the surface of an extraterrestrial body.
Participation Details
Individuals interested in having their names included on the mission can submit them until 11:59 p.m. EST on January 15, 2027. Participants will also receive a personalized digital boarding pass as a keepsake.
Mission Overview
The Dragonfly rotorcraft is currently being assembled at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Maryland. It is scheduled to launch in 2028 and will arrive at Titan in 2034. Titan, known for its thick atmosphere and liquid methane lakes, presents a unique landscape for exploration. The mission aims to investigate Titan’s various environments and search for signs of prebiotic chemistry, which could offer insights into the conditions necessary for life.
Leadership and Management
The Dragonfly mission is managed by APL, with Elizabeth Turtle serving as the principal investigator. It is the fourth mission under NASA’s New Frontiers Program, overseen by the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, expressed enthusiasm for the mission, highlighting its potential to enhance understanding of habitability on distant worlds.
