355th Wing hosts civic leaders from southern Arizona for tour of Joint Base San Antonio Lackland

The 355th Wing hosted a civic leader tour at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland from Oct. 6-8, 2026, bringing together key community figures from southern Arizona to learn about the U.S. Air Force’s operations.

Building Community Relationships

The tour aimed to enhance understanding between civic leaders and the Air Force by providing opportunities to experience the service’s missions firsthand. Participants engaged with various programs and facilities, which fostered stronger ties between the military and local communities.

During the visit, civic leaders attended Basic Military Training graduation ceremonies and toured significant facilities, including the 344th Training Squadron, the Inter-American Air Forces Academy, and the Special Warfare Training Wing. They also had discussions with local civic and business leaders at the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

Insights into Air Force Training

Civic leaders observed the transformation of civilians into Airmen during Basic Military Training, gaining an understanding of their roles in supporting airpower. They specifically learned about the training pipeline for rescue Airmen at the Special Warfare Training Wing, which prepares individuals for high-stakes rescue missions.

Fernando Flores, a member of the Chamber of Southern Arizona Military Affairs Committee, expressed admiration for the Special Warfare Training Wing’s rigor. He noted the demanding nature of pararescue training and how witnessing it firsthand heightened his appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in the program.

International Partnerships and Community Support

The tour also showcased the Air Force’s global collaborations through the Inter-American Air Forces Academy, which enhances military capabilities and fosters international relationships. Lt. Col. Lyndsey Smith, who leads the 837th Training Squadron, articulated the academy’s role in solidifying national security through partnership development.

Flores remarked on the impressive scale of Basic Military Training, where over 700 Airmen graduate weekly, and praised the academy’s work with more than 30 nations in enhancing mutual security interests.

Reflections on the Experience

While meeting with Tim Farrell from the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, civic leaders discussed strengthening community-military partnerships, which can bolster local economies and enhance advocacy efforts for military installations.

Reflecting on the tour, Flores emphasized the profound respect he gained for the dedicated individuals serving in the Air Force. He highlighted the essential roles of leadership, strategic planning, and teamwork in executing the military’s mission effectively.

The civic leader tour exemplifies the 355th Wing’s commitment to engaging with southern Arizona leaders, providing insights into the Air Force’s operations and strengthening community ties that support the Rescue and Attack mission.
