Smithsonian gifts computerized telescope to Price Elementary in Yuma Proving Ground

Pfc. James D. Price Elementary School has recently received a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope as part of its educational resources, enhancing the learning experience for its military students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. This addition comes from the Scientists Taking Astronomy to Rural Schools (STARS) program, managed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.

Telescope Donation Enhances Learning

Located on the Howard Cantonment Area of U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG), the school’s new telescope includes a computerized mount, solar filter, and accessories designed for astrophotography. The program aims to leverage the rural area’s clear night skies to foster interest in science and STEM fields among students. Jason Gurtman, a Community Engagement Specialist for the STARS Program, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative’s potential impact in Yuma County.

The program has garnered significant excitement from local educators, marking Yuma as a pilot location for these educational efforts.

Hands-On Astronomy Activities

On October 15, representatives from STARS visited Price School to assist teachers and students in using the telescope. The students participated in various group activities, including observing the sun through the solar filter and learning about the solar system’s planets. They also crafted their own sundials using paper plates and construction paper. Principal Alexandria Johnson and Yuma Elementary School District # 1 Governing Board Vice President David Ibarra were present to support the event.

Brenda Findley, a teacher at the school, shared her excitement about the new equipment, stating, “I’m so excited and happy for this opportunity.” She expressed that students were eager to use the telescope after helping assemble it in the classroom.

Community Engagement and Night Observation

Later that evening, Findley joined STARS personnel for a public night observation at the Foothills Branch of the Yuma County Library. During the event, students had the chance to further engage with astronomy. Student Elias Barrera remarked on the experience.

The introduction of the telescope is expected to enrich the educational experience at Price School, fostering a greater appreciation for science among its students.
