Grand Canyon National Park seeks public comment on trans Canyon telephone line

The National Park Service is inviting public feedback on a proposal aimed at enhancing safety related to the historic Trans-Canyon Telephone Line while preserving its significant features. The comment period runs from October 28 to November 11, 2026.

Safety Hazards and Historical Significance

The Trans-Canyon Telephone Line, which traverses the inner canyon of the Grand Canyon, closely follows the Bright Angel and North Kaibab Trails and includes a spur toward the South Kaibab Trail. Originally reconstructed by Civilian Conservation Corps crews in 1935, this telephone line is recognized in the National Register of Historic Places due to its importance in the park’s communication, engineering, and administrative history.

The proposed safety enhancements are a response to risks posed by suspended, hanging, and fallen telephone wires. These hazards affect helicopter and emergency operations in the inner canyon and can pose entanglement threats to wildlife.

Proposed Changes

Under the new proposal, the National Park Service plans to remove certain sections of the historic telephone wire deemed necessary to mitigate safety hazards. Additionally, visibility markers would be installed on the wire that remains. Key elements of the line, such as historic poles, cross-arms, insulators, and other hardware, will be preserved unless they pose independent safety risks.

Recognizing that the original copper wire is a critical historical element, NPS has acknowledged that removing parts of the wire and adding safety markers will alter characteristics that contribute to the line’s historical significance. Such changes are classified as an adverse effect under the National Historic Preservation Act.

Consultation and Documentation

To address the implications of the proposed changes, NPS consulted with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Officer and created a draft Memorandum of Agreement. This agreement outlines measures to mitigate the project’s impact on the historic Trans-Canyon Telephone Line while allowing for necessary safety improvements and ensuring the history and significance of the line are documented and preserved.

All comments will be considered public records and may be made publicly available at any time, including personal information included in submissions.
