Sun Devil football faces London in ASU All Access event

The Arizona State University football team recently embarked on an international journey, traveling over 5,000 miles to London for the Union Jack Classic against the University of Kansas. The event marked a unique opportunity for the Sun Devils to experience a new culture while balancing their preparations for the game.

Exploring London and Team Bonding

In a recent episode of ASU All Access with FOX 10, Associate Head Coach Hines Ward, along with players Reed Harris, Omarion Miller, and Kyson Brown, shared their experiences from the trip. For many on the team, this was their first international travel experience, allowing them to enjoy local attractions and cuisine, including traditional fish and chips.

Ward noted that witnessing his players embrace their time in London was particularly rewarding. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity afforded to the students, many of whom were experiencing the city for the first time. “I’m more blessed and happy for the kids that we have,” Ward said, emphasizing the cultural significance of the trip.

Preparation Amidst Adventure

While the coaching staff focused on game preparations, they also appreciated the players’ adventures throughout London. The team explored the city’s iconic sights and familiarized themselves with its unique transportation system. “It’s crazy that they drive on the wrong side of the road,” remarked Miller, highlighting the differences between the U.S. and British driving norms.

Harris drew comparisons between his experiences in London and American cities, noting, “It kind of reminds me of being back in Boston.” Such comparisons helped the players connect their experiences abroad to their lives at home.

Historic Game at Wembley Stadium

The Union Jack Classic culminated in a historic football game, where Arizona State emerged victorious over Kansas with a score of 24-17 at Wembley Stadium. This event marked the first college football game held at the renowned venue, adding significance to the Sun Devils’ journey.

The trip not only provided thrilling experiences and memories but also fostered a stronger team bond, according to Brown. “It’s definitely making us a lot closer,” he said, reflecting on their shared adventures in a foreign country.
