The City of Phoenix has introduced a new initiative aimed at assisting residents with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program is designed to provide guidance on applications, renewals, and work requirements, with the aim of minimizing benefit loss and helping residents submit complete information to the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES).
Support for Residents
While the City of Phoenix does not have the authority to determine eligibility, approve or renew benefits, or administer SNAP, city staff are available to help residents understand DES requirements and prepare their applications. The support available includes one-on-one assistance in completing SNAP applications and renewals, help in meeting work requirements, and post-application support.
Mayor Kate Gallego emphasized the importance of this initiative. She noted that many families are losing their nutritional safety net due to federal changes, paperwork errors, and red tape, making the program a vital resource for those in need.
Appointment and Community Clinics
Walk-in services are also available during normal business hours at Family Services Centers. Additionally, the City will host community clinics, with the next one scheduled for October 28 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Emmett McLoughlin C.T.E.C.
Required Documentation
To facilitate the application or renewal process, residents are encouraged to bring relevant documents. This includes items for identity verification, proof of address, income information for all household members, Social Security numbers, bank statements, and any notices from DES regarding renewals or updates.
Additional Resources Available
In addition to direct assistance, the City connects residents with various resources, including Wildfire Arizona’s statewide SNAP resource locator and the Health-e-Arizona Plus application portal, as well as general information about the DES Nutrition Assistance program.
