Scottsdale will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, inviting the community to pay tribute to those who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Attendance is free, with pre-ceremony music starting at 2:30 p.m.
Keynote Address by Former Navy SEAL
The keynote speaker for the event will be former U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Rob Sarver. A 2004 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Sarver served as a surface warfare officer before joining SEAL Team 3, completing seven deployments that included three tours for Operation Iraqi Freedom and two for Operation Enduring Freedom. His service earned him the Bronze Star Medal with a combat “V” device.
Since retiring from the military in 2013, Sarver has taken on leadership roles in business and has been active in assisting veterans with their transition to civilian life. He co-founded The Heroes Journey and often speaks to various groups about the challenges veterans face.
Ceremony Highlights
The ceremony will feature welcoming remarks from Mayor Lisa Borowsky, along with the recognition of Pippa Arthur, the winner of the Scottsdale Unified School District Written Word Contest for her piece titled “Empathy.”
Other elements of the program will include the posting and retirement of the colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a performance of the national anthem by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Lenny Miller. The Scottsdale Veterans Advisory Commission will also provide opening and closing remarks.
Residents, veterans, military families, and visitors are encouraged to attend this event to honor the sacrifices made by the nation’s veterans.
