Scottsdale starts sewer infrastructure improvements on Thomas Road before major corridor reconstruction

Scottsdale has initiated sewer infrastructure enhancements along Thomas Road, preparing for a comprehensive roadway reconstruction while boosting the reliability and capacity of the city’s wastewater system. The sewer project is estimated to cost around $2.5 million and is expected to continue through late October 2026.

Details of the Sewer Project

The project will involve the construction of approximately 1,200 feet of a new 8-inch sewer main between 68th Street and the vicinity of Diamante Village at 6565 E. Thomas Road. Additionally, around 16 existing sewer manholes will undergo rehabilitation from just west of 64th Street to just west of 73rd Street. The new sewer line is intended to increase wastewater capacity for future development while ensuring reliable service for current customers. The rehabilitation of manholes aims to strengthen aging infrastructure and reduce the likelihood of future failures, thereby extending the sewer system’s lifespan.

Upcoming Waterline Construction

Following the sewer work, a new waterline installation is scheduled to begin in late 2026. These infrastructure improvements precede a separate $24.4 million capital improvement project aimed at reconstructing Thomas Road between 56th and 73rd streets. This larger project will address long-term roadway maintenance needs and replace outdated water and sewer infrastructure located beneath the road.

Roadway Improvements Planned

The planned enhancements for Thomas Road include a complete reconstruction of the roadway pavement, the addition of a new right-turn lane at the intersection with 68th Street, and the replacement of outdated traffic signals. Additional upgrades will involve grading and drainage improvements, the installation of ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, and restoration of lane striping to meet current roadway configurations. A geotechnical evaluation indicated that full reconstruction of this section of Thomas Road is necessary.

Funding and Construction Management

The underground utility improvements are intended to minimize disruption by completing necessary work before the roadway is repaved, thereby extending the life of the new pavement and optimizing taxpayer resources. The larger Thomas Road reconstruction project is financed through a $17.36 million federal grant, complemented by $7.02 million in local transportation funding for the required local match. The sewer improvements are funded separately through the city’s Infrastructure Improvement Plan, utilizing development impact fees for the new sewer line and sewer utility rates for manhole rehabilitation.

Construction Impact on the Community

Construction on the sewer project will be managed by Achen Gardner. Residents and motorists should anticipate temporary lane restrictions, construction equipment, and occasional traffic adjustments within the work zone. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the construction period. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and allow extra travel time while the work is underway.
