Essa Williams was sentenced to 50 years in prison on October 27, 2026, for his role in the attempted murder of Officer Tyler Moldovan and for aggravated assault on Officer Zachary Johnson, according to a Maricopa County Superior Court judge.
Officer Moldovan was severely injured during an incident on December 14, 2021, while he and other officers were searching for a suspect who had fled a vehicle near 19th Avenue and West Camelback Road. Moldovan sustained life-threatening injuries and is still in recovery.
Reactions from Law Enforcement
Following the sentencing, Chief Matt Giordano spoke outside the courthouse, emphasizing the profound impact of the attack on both officers. He noted that the violent and unprovoked nature of the assault on the then-22-year-old Moldovan nearly resulted in his death. Giordano expressed appreciation for the efforts of prosecutors, detectives, and supporters of Moldovan, while acknowledging that justice cannot fully restore what was lost.
Giordano highlighted the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers each day as they fulfill their duties.
Accountability and Support
The police department expressed gratitude to the court and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for ensuring accountability for those who attack police officers. The sentencing represents a significant moment for the department and the community as they reflect on the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel.
