Davis Monthan Air Force Base hosts symposium to prepare future first sergeants

More than 45 prospective first sergeants gathered at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base from September 28 to October 1, 2026, for a four-day symposium aimed at enhancing their administrative skills and problem-solving abilities essential for supporting Airmen.

The role of first sergeants involves advising commanders on various aspects concerning Airmen, including their health, morale, welfare, and discipline. This position demands strong interpersonal skills alongside a solid understanding of the administrative processes that underpin these responsibilities.

Focus on Administrative Skills

During the event, attendees engaged in learning critical administrative tasks such as case documentation, reporting requirements, and coordination with commanders and base agencies. They also participated in simulated scenarios that tested their responses in high-pressure situations where their assistance is crucial.

Training emphasized the importance of resolving discrepancies among Airmen in a fair and timely manner. Through briefings, discussions based on real-life scenarios, and panels with seasoned first sergeants, participants practiced identifying issues, connecting Airmen to appropriate resources, and ensuring proper follow-through.

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Michael Barrows, senior enlisted leader of the 355th Component Maintenance Squadron and a former first sergeant, underscored the significant personal impact that first sergeants can have during crises. He shared his own experience, emphasizing the importance of having a supportive first sergeant during difficult times.

Peer Support and Leadership Insights

For many participants, the symposium provided an initial glimpse into the extensive demands placed on first sergeants and the collaborative efforts required to support both each other and the Airmen they serve. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Alan Freeman expressed appreciation for the support from fellow first sergeants and agencies throughout the training process.

Col. Jose Cabrera, commander of the 355th Wing, addressed the ethical and legal responsibilities that come with leadership. He remarked on the necessity of caring for personnel to maintain an all-volunteer force, reflecting on the correlation between personnel care and unit success.

The symposium concluded with a graduation ceremony on October 1, where experienced first sergeants provided valuable insights and shared their lessons learned. The prospective first sergeants returned to their respective units better prepared to support Airmen, enhance unit readiness, and contribute to the mission at Davis-Monthan.
