The Department of Physical Therapy is set to host its fourth Kids’ Night Out on November 7 at Summit Gymnastics, featuring a variety of games, snacks, and activities. This event will be managed by faculty from Northern Arizona University (NAU), along with volunteer Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students and certified pediatric physical therapists.
Event Overview
Initially conceived as a student capstone project, Kids’ Night Out has evolved into a biannual community event aimed at providing a safe and enjoyable environment for children with developmental delays and their siblings. The initiative allows parents to enjoy a night out while their children engage in supervised activities, benefiting both parties. It also offers DPT students valuable hands-on experience in pediatric care.
Families can drop off their children for an evening filled with supervised fun, led by NAU faculty and trained students. The event is free and accessible to community families.
Educational Opportunities for Students
This event is organized by DPT students who are in their final year of coursework, allowing them to learn critical pediatric therapy skills in a community-oriented setting. The students gain insight from both NAU faculty and community therapists while interacting with the children who attend, which enhances their practical skills in pediatric physical therapy.
Recognizing that many traditional community events are often not inclusive of children with disabilities, the Department of Physical Therapy aims to provide similar opportunities for these children.
